Kofax Capture Installation Tips and Common Problems
Installing Kofax Capture is a fairly straightforward process. However, there are ways you can optimize it and avoid potential issues. Some examples include utilizing the Updates folder, and following an order of installation when working with OEM VRS software. This article covers these installation tips and a couple of the common pitfalls that occur when installing Kofax.
Kofax Capture Installation Tips
Temporarily Disable the Anti-Virus and Firewall
Most anti-virus and firewall software do their jobs exceptionally well. Unfortunately, this can cause issues when installing Kofax Capture. We typically recommend temporarily disabling anti-virus and firewall to allow the installation to proceed without corrupting the installation.
If your IT security team does not allow this, or you are not comfortable with disabling them, you will want to add exceptions to prevent Kofax Capture from getting corrupted. Learn more from our knowledgebase article on Antivirus Best Practices.
Create an “Updates” Folder for Service/Fix Packs
When the setup is finishing, a check is made to see if there is an Updates folder. If there is, then the setup will install any service or fix packs contained within. This feature can help with automated “silent” installs. When setting this up, the folder must be at the same level as the Kofax Capture setup installer, explicitly named “Updates”.

Copy Installer Files Locally
The installation process for Kofax Capture can be pretty intensive, which requires copying a large number of files and creating registry keys. One thing that can improve performance is copying the installer locally – especially when compared to running from a network location. One exception to this is the WrkInst\setup.exe installer, which is required to run from the CaptureSV share on a Kofax Capture server.
Common Installation Pitfalls
Permissions Is Not Properly Configured
Users may get error messages when working in the modules if the appropriate permissions haven’t been configured. One of the most common permissions issue is that there are too many restrictions on the CaptureSV network share. Review Kofax QAID 2482 for additional details regarding proper permissions.
Verify Kofax Capture Installation Requirements (Including Version)
When setting up a server-client structure, a common issue is installing the Kofax Capture base version on the server and workstation, and then applying the service and fix packs to only one. Doing this will result in several errors within Capture. To correct this, you will need to apply the corresponding service and fix packs to the other system (server or workstation). To verify which version of Kofax Capture you are running, open a module such as Batch Manager, and select the open book icon in the upper right corner.

Wrong Order of Installation
Manufacturers such as Fujitsu and Canon include VRS with many scanner models. This has a license built into the software and allows you to use the features of VRS without having to pay for an additional license. However, if you don’t get the order of installation right, you may need to redo the entire installation process.
The proper order of installation is as follows:
- Install the OEM VRS software
- Install Kofax Capture using the /NoVRS switch
- Install any fix/service packs (unless the “Updates” folder was utilized)
- Install any custom modules and import/export connectors
If you omit the /NoVRS switch during the installation process, then Kofax Capture will overwrite the OEM VRS with their basic version without licensing. Depending on the scanner manufacturer, this may result in having to uninstall Kofax completely and restart the process.
There are several things that can impact your experience with installing Kofax Capture. If you take the right steps, you can avoid most pitfalls and get on to processing documents quickly.
To recap, ensure that you have proper permissions set up, and that you have temporarily disabled your anti-virus (or at least set the appropriate exceptions). Also, be sure that the proper version of Kofax Capture is installed on all machines using it.
